Based on one of the first ever AIDS memoirs in Australia by Maria Pallotta-Chiarolli, Someone You Know, will be an emotionally charged duologue performed by Elena Carapetis and Nic English.
This is the story of Jon, who is living with AIDS, and the story of his extraordinary friendship with Maria – two people facing the horrors of an epidemic that took hold of the late 1980’s and early 1990’s. Set in Adelaide, this is a heartbreaking personal account of the connection between migrant and queer lives at a time of intense scrutiny in Australia and the world.
Maria and Jon teach together, hold common views, and share secrets to keep them safe from family and societal pressures. The threads and entanglements of their lives come together at Jon’s final gathering- a moment- in a hospice- where his life is coming to an end, and Maria is about to give birth. This will be a chamber theatre piece for two performers, adapted by Anthony Nocera. It is a story about grief- it is a story from the heart of cultural minorities in Adelaide. It is a story about love.
