STRATA // FORGIVENESS

BY Peter Beaglehole // Piri Eddy

Two new one-act plays in one thrilling night of South Australian Theatre.

STRATA

Strata is a puzzle. It invites you to piece together the characters’ motives and actions. It challenges you to see them as complex, loving and deeply flawed – in other words, people like us. It does so by moving backwards in time. As you sit in the theatre in a world that is fundamentally different from the one we knew twelve months ago, perhaps Strata will invite you to look backwards as well. How did we get here? What can we learn from looking back? And how can we move forward differently?

FORGIVENESS

True forgiveness is really, really hard. Piri’s play is a startling look at the underbelly of violence within an ordinary family living in rural South Australia. Like an epic poem brought to life, we weave seamlessly between the interior landscapes of these characters, and collectively they form a harrowing and visceral mosaic of grief and loss, their lives crumbling under the weight of an undeniable crisis in masculinity.
The deepest tragedy exists in the smallest details of their lives, and this play seeks to amplify the epic world that simmers in the mundane. The intense intimacy they all experience without having a language for it, without being able to express it, reveals how people are blinded and deceived and failed by language, and the ways in which trauma splinters memory and our sense of ourselves.
Ultimately, the only way to end a cycle of violence is with forgiveness—forgiveness that asks you to swallow hurt deep inside yourself and heal it, and it takes time. Lots of it. Forgiveness looks at the consequences of a world without it, where anger is allowed to eat away at the soul.
